As soon as we arrived in Dubai, I read about the fun excursions offered through our hotel. After reading about various exciting activities, I decided I wanted to go on a Land Rover desert tour, where you take an open-air car and drive around the desert.
We booked the early morning tour and our guide picked us up promptly at 6:30am! On our way to the tour, we stopped at a place where we saw camel racing. Crazy, right?! The jockeys were exercising the camels so we were lucky enough to see them run around. The people who race the camels don’t win any money because gambling is actually illegal in Dubai. Instead, they win a car or a different luxury item. They used to have children ride the camels since they are lighter but now they have a machine that attaches to the camel that urges them to go faster.
After watching a bit of camel racing, we drove out to the Dubai Desert Conversation Reserve. We had the choice of riding in a 2015 Land Rover or a 1950s open-air vehicle. We opted for the older model! They dressed us with traditional head wraps, which was awesome because it kept the sand out of our face and hair. We drove through the desert for about 20 minutes and I can seriously say it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Since it’s a reserve, we saw numerous indigenous animals throughout the desert.
After our drive, we arrived at a bedouin tent that was situated in the middle of the desert. Our guides served us a traditional breakfast of sweet noodles and eggs, as well as tea and coffee. Before eating, they washed our hands with rosewater, which is a traditional practice. After breakfast, we met with a Sheik and were allowed to ask him any questions we had about the culture.
The sand dunes were breathtaking! Picture the ripples in the ocean but in a sand version. Our guide showed us a tree in the middle of the desert where, rumor has it, the bark can settle an upset stomach. The tour started at 6:30 in the morning and we were back at our hotel right at noon. The trip was absolutely incredible and I can’t wait to go back. Dubai is a beautiful city, rich with culture and adventure. I absolutely suggest this trip to anyone who is looking for an amazing experience!
